Fire audits fail for boring reasons: a blocked exit, a hydrant with no pressure, an untested panel, an extinguisher three years past service. Passive fire protection
- Compartmentation, fire doors and sealed service penetrations
- Two independent means of egress, correct travel distance and door swing direction
- Illuminated exit signage and emergency lighting on backup power
- Fire-rated staircases kept free of storage and pressurised where required
Active systems to test, not just inspect
- Detection — smoke and heat detectors, zone verification at the panel, battery backup
- Hydrants — pump auto-start, jockey pump cut-in, terminal pressure at the farthest hydrant
- Sprinklers — flow switch test, valve status monitoring, no obstruction below heads
- Extinguishers — type-to-risk matching, pressure gauge, refill date and mounting height
- Special hazards — kitchen suppression, transformer deluge, server room clean agent
Drills that measure something
Record total evacuation time, headcount accuracy at assembly, whether the fire crew reached the seat of fire, and whether the emergency call chain worked. Rotate drill scenarios and hold at least one unannounced drill per year, including a night-shift drill.

Keep the approved building plan, fire officer inspection reports, NOC and renewals, pump and panel AMC records, hydrant test logs, extinguisher servicing records and drill reports in one indexed file. Most NOC renewal delays are documentation delays.
