In India the workplace is rarely insulated from the environment around it. Ambient heat, urban particulate load, monsoon water quality and site sanitation shape worker health as strongly as the process itself. Any occupational health programme that ignores these factors will keep treating symptoms it never explains.
Heat: the largest and least measured exposure
Across foundries, glass, textile, boiler areas and outdoor construction, heat is the dominant seasonal hazard. Heat strain causes dehydration, cramps, syncope, kidney stress and a measurable rise in accident rates through impaired concentration.
- Measure WBGT rather than dry-bulb temperature; set work-rest cycles against the reading
- Provide electrolyte hydration points within 30 m of hot workfaces
- Shift heavy outdoor work to early morning between March and June
- Screen for renal function in chronically heat-exposed cohorts
- Train supervisors to recognise heat exhaustion before collapse
Ambient and workplace air quality
In many industrial belts the outdoor PM2.5 baseline already exceeds the health-based standard, so indoor sources add on top of an unhealthy floor. Respirable silica, cotton dust, welding fume, diesel exhaust and solvent vapour are the recurring contributors.

Noise and vibration
The Indian occupational limit is 90 dB(A) for eight hours, with hearing conservation good practice starting at 85 dB(A). Hand-arm vibration from grinders and breakers and whole-body vibration from earthmoving machinery are almost never assessed on Indian sites.
Water, sanitation and vector exposure
Waterborne illness and vector-borne fever (dengue, malaria, chikungunya) are the leading causes of absenteeism on large construction projects. Potable water testing, labour colony sanitation, waste-water pooling control and fogging schedules belong in the HSE plan, not in facilities.
Waste, chemicals and the environmental audit
An environmental audit closes the loop by checking consent conditions, hazardous waste authorisation and manifests, effluent and emission compliance, noise mapping and workplace exposure records together. When environmental and occupational health data are read side by side, the source of a health trend is usually obvious.
